Responsible Managers Get Results!

If there are two managers that are equal in intelligence … why does one manager get better results than the other?

How many times do people end up in the role of manager and that role exceeds his or her abilities? The answer is too often and the result to your business can be down right shocking. These incompetent managers usually demand productivity and when they don’t get it they blame others and/or everything else for their own failure. The results are many but, you begin to see problems such as; absenteeism, constant firings, voluntary turnover, and dips in productivity all resulting in your business being robbed of its experienced employees and potential revenues.

About Lori Williams

Her progression through sales and branch management positions with local and national services, to the position of Regional Vice President, could be described as – “meteoric”!  Lori works through Creative Management Consultants (CMC), a management consulting and training firm that has been dedicated to the overall health and performance of companies in corporate America, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa since 1982. In the center of all this chaos this incompetent manager will experience constant stress and an overwhelming feeling of being buried by the demands of the new position. To this manager the solution must be that these non performing employees just need training or to be replaced. This could be the problem but when it’s not the employees…it’s the manager and if the wrong focus is applied what happens is a new round of stress, anxiety, employee departures, and the continual decline in productivity, revenue and profits. Training the employees or focusing on the employees will not fix an incompetent manager.

So how do you fix the problem? First you have to hire a competent manager, duh? What I mean is, a manager that is responsible. This is how good managers get results. The difference is responsibility...

– being responsible enough to do what it takes to produce results

Poor performers (whether manager or employee) will always blame it on the market, the turnover, the location of the office, the attitudes of customers, etc...

Responsibility is a choice, it means making no excuses. We all have the power to choose what we think and what we do. Responsibility is at the core of emotional intelligence. Studies show that 80% of your success in life depends on your emotional intelligence while only 20% on IQ.

In order to be responsible you first must be aware of your situation and feelings and then exercise your power to control your response. So, self control is a critical leadership skill.

What else do you need?

  • problem solving skills
  • the ability to get people to work together
  • and optimism is another key indicator, optimists believe that good things are going to happen and their self confidence acts as a reinforcment as they keep trying, thinking and problem solving

Ever hear these complaints?

  • “Our competition’s rates are lower”
  • “They have a contract”
  • “We don’t have brochures or a website”
  • “We can’t fill the orders we have”
  • “We’re in the wrong location”
  • “We can’t find the people”
  • “Our budget was unrealistic”
  • “Our client is unrealistic”
  • “It’s our market…..it’s different than any other market”, I hear this one ALL THE TIME!

The list can go on and on…..

Are these really reasons why you can’t produce results or are they just problems that need to be solved or excuses?
