Execution is Everything

Bridging the Gap Between Strategy and Success

Jim Huling, CEO of Matrix Resources, one of the nations' largest contract staffing and recruiting firms, had a clear message for attendees at VCG's annual User Meeting -- you have to execute to achieve success.

In his presentation, "Execution is Everything," Huling stressed that the biggest challenge facing every business in America is execution bridging the gap between strategy and what people actually do.

Huling explained how to develop an approach that can help firms effectively execute their strategies. The first step is to decide what's important. Most companies have too many goals, and as a result, don't achieve many of them. Huling pointed out that companies that have 2-3 goals are more likely to achieve them. The lesson here? Too many goals bog you down and do not create focus or passion because employees don't believe they can achieve them.

Once you have established your goals, make sure that you and your staff are accountable for them. Matrix Resources uses a metric scorecard to manage goals. It is highly visible at the front desk for employees and clients to see every time they come into the office, and motivates everyone to perform at an exceptional level, Huling said. Equally important, it can help you differentiate your staffing and recruiting service from others.

After Huling's motivational talk, VCG's president, Steve Taylor presented a similar strategy based on the principles of management guru Verne Harnish from his book, "Mastering the Rockefeller Habits." Harnish advocates three key habits for high-growth firms: priorities (or goals), data analyze data to gain insight into your business operations and rhythm an effective rhythm of daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly meetings.

VCG has adopted many of his principles including daily huddles a quick departmental meeting for team members to discuss if they need any help overcoming roadblocks, leading to increased employee productivity. VCG's management team also developed three to five quarterly goals for the company that were clearly defined to employees at a quarterly company meeting.

The result? VCG employees always know how they are doing, as well as the company. They are more focused and accountable, Taylor said. Employees understand their goals, they are easier to manage and track and the program creates a fun, motivated team effort.

The bottom line to all this is simple: Be realistic by establishing a few goals. Then make sure everyone is accountable for the goals. By doing so, you can establish passion, create focus and align your company vision to achieve success.
